The underneath and the centre of the blade are left mostly unpolished showcasing the individual hammer strokes used to make these incredible archaeology trowels.

These archaeology trowels are hand forged in Britain by Dr. Zech and closely conform to the familiar London pattern. Each trowel is forged, oil hardened, and fully heat treated following the recommended tempering instructions for the different steel grades. This ensures these trowels will last a minimum of 4x longer than the leading high street brand! The full tang handle means they are well balanced and the handle wont pull off and the wood scales can easily be replaced by any amateur. Dr. Zech ensures these are working tools for working archaeologists. Why by a high street trowel every few years when you can buy one that lasts your entire career!?

Below is a summary of the steel grades Dr. Zech uses for his archaeology trowels; if you wish to know more please read steel types and other literature.
- En3 or En8 (Mild Steel): Least wear resistance. Good for beginners and occasional use.
- 1084: decent wear resistance and toughness, good for professionals
- A8Mod: Superior tool steel featuring improved wear resistance, toughness, and impact resistance. 8.5% Chromium makes it slightly more resistant to rusting over 1084.
- X50CrMoV15: German stainless steel for tools requiring chip resistance; decent toughness and superior rust resistance. Good for marine clays and bog-like environments. Burrs can be easily removed with a hand file.
All trowels are hand forged from 4mm or 5mm stock.
